What Can We Do Right Now?

(We have an URGENT need for Postcarders! Skip down to the POSTCARDING header if you’re looking for a quick #politicalTherapy fix! you can do RIGHT NOW from the comfort of your own home!)

It is with great disappointment but the utmost respect for the ongoing efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19 that we decided to cancel  the voter registration trip we had planned for this weekend. We are still working closely with the North Carolina Democratic Party  to figure out how we can help flip the State House and take back a US Senate seat. We are also coordinating with our friends across the river, Blue Familes  – Arlington Dems, to figure out how to best continue this important work from our homes all over the DMV.

Update for 2020: After successfully flipping the State House and Senate in Virginia in 2019, we are excited to return to the work we started in 2018- flipping the State Houses in Pennsylvania and North Carolina! Pennsylvania doesn’t have their primary until April 28th so while we’re waiting to find out who our candidates there will be, we can get to work right now in North Carolina. Their primary was on March 3rd and our friends at Flip NC have put together an exciting list of flippable districts with a complete list of the rock star candidates who are already working hard to turn the Tar Heel State Carolina Blue!

WHAT CAN DO YOU TO HELP FROM HOME?

Please DONATE if you can-every donation-no matter how small- will help these candidates reach out to voters between now and November. We’re in uncharted territory and these campaigns need all the resources they can get to plot a new course to victory. Every dollar you donate will also help unseat Senator Thom Tillis who’s seat is in serious jeopardy. He won by the slimmest margin in NC history in 2014 as a moderate and since has become a major trumpkin. His popularity has dropped like a stone and Cal Cunningham is a strong challenger. We can flip the State House AND take back a critical and crucial US Senate seat IF we support these candidates NOW. Every dollar you donate does five times the work because you support every candidate above our State House challengers. These are grassroots campaigns that are run on shoe string budgets so every dollar really does make a difference.

POSTCARDING!

Jill for Justice

We have an URGENT need for Postcarders! There is a special election happening on April 7th for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Why does this election matter? If we don’t take back this seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, we won’t be able to stop gerrymandering there and there is no path to blue victory…this year or for the next decade. What can we do? Send postcards to voters urging them to sign up to vote by MAIL and to vote for Judge Jill Karofsky! We’re partnering with Postcards for Voters because they have made it SO easy to do all of this from the comfort of your own home! Follow their instructions, sign up, submit your sample, and you’ll be giving as many addresses as you can handle for this CRUCIAL election.

PHONEBANKING!

Our friends at Flip NC are hosting a virtual phonebank on Tuesday, March 31st for Nicole Quick! Nicole is running to flip NC 59 which is one of NC’s most flippable districts and an essential pick-up to flip the State House and to take back Tillis’ Senate seat. She also SUPPORTS DC STATEHOOD!

Why Nicole is running: “As a mother, I worry about my child’s future. The North Carolina we live in today is very different than it was when I was growing up here. The state that created Smart Start is falling behind the rest of the nation in terms of the quality and safety of our schools. We’re allowing our lakes and rivers to be polluted and our water supplies to be threatened, and we’re not holding polluters accountable. Many of our citizens have to decide on a monthly basis whether they can afford their medications. I am running because I believe the interest of our state’s people should come before the interests of corporate CEOs and shareholders. I am running for the sake of my child and all of North Carolina’s children.”

Nicole was born in southeastern North Carolina, grew up in Columbus and Brunswick Counties. Her bachelor’s degree is in politics and economics, and her master’s is in economics with a focus on economic development. After school, Nicole went to work in Greensboro, NC, managing a $40 million business segment of Guilford Mills. There she was responsible for all forecasting and budgeting and for planning and scheduling production. Simultaneously, she led and managed domestic and international sales forces for Guilford’s furniture and home fashions businesses.

From Guilford Mills, she moved to a position with Brayton International, a division of Steelcase, in High Point, NC. At Brayton, she spearheaded process improvements to create greater efficiencies and led teams to reduce costs and waste while maintaining high standards of product quality.

Nicole left Brayton to start a family. When her son Tad was diagnosed with autism, she decided to leave her career behind and undergo training in order to provide daily occupational therapy for him. Once Tad was in school, Nicole went on to work as a one-on-one aid in the classroom with him and, later, to lead teacher instruction and workshops focused on working with children with autism in inclusive classrooms.

Currently, Nicole lives with her husband and son and 2 dogs in their home in eastern Guilford County. She and her husband have lived there for twenty years, though the son and dogs joined them more recently.

We’ll be updating this website, our facebook page and email lists in the coming weeks so please follow along and let us know what you’re doing to help push the Blue Wave in 2020!

Next Step: Take our Survey!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the March 27th Fundraiser for Dan Helmer and Joshua G Cole. It was a tremendous success and we raised over $4000.

Comet Ping Pong put on an amazing party and the candidates were nothing short of inspiring.

Now we’d like to take our efforts District wide. We need to recruit people in every Ward to help us with fundraisers, canvassing, postcarding, phonebanking, voter registration and more. Can you help us get the word out about the Blue Wave, the Virginia elections, and the work we’re doing? Please fill out this survey and pass it along so we can get to work flipping seats in the Virginia State House and Senate!

The work we do now is foundational work. By building the biggest and strongest group of dedicated volunteers and grassroots organizations who are ready, willing and able to get to work today in Virginia and beyond, we are building a strong foundation for the hard work we need to do in 2020 to take back the White House and Congress. The fight in Virginia and in 2020 is going to be brutal and we need all hands on deck so please help us build now for a better and brighter future tomorrow. So please fill out the survey, join our Facebook Group and like our page, and tell your friends, family, and fellow activists!

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE: Bring the Blue Wave to North Carolina Fundraiser October 17th!

Please join us on October 17th at Sessions and Seasons from 6-9pm for a fundraiser supporting six progressive females running for the NC Statehouse. Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc across the state but also put these campaigns woefully behind which is why they need our help now more than ever. All of these candidates are in FLIPPABLE districts. We only need to take back four seats to break the GOP supermajority. Most of these candidates are in flippable Congressional districts which means if we can get voters to come out and vote for these candidates, we could also reclaim those Congressional seats.

Why North Carolina?

There is a GOP super majority in the State House, their district maps have been deemed unconstitutionaland now the state is struggling to recover from historical flood waters that destroyed communities and left a wake of toxins in all of the major water ways. The people of NC are ready for new leadership and want change. There are so many new candidates from all walks of life who are eager to make a difference and get to work for the great people of NC. But they need our help.

When we support candidates at the state level, we fight gerrymandering by ensuring a more equitable legislature to draw the new electoral maps. When we support candidates at the State level, we also support the candidates above them. If we can flip the NC Statehouse, we can also flip Congress and that has real life consequences for the people in DC and all across the Nation. When we support candidates at the State level, we enact real change for the citizens of that State. 400,000 Virginians are now eligible for Medicaid because of the hard work of six candidates we helped get elected las year. There are 500,000 people who could qualify for Medicaid in North Carolina if we can help these candidates take back the Statehouse.

Who We Are Supporting:

Sydney Batch for NC House District 37:

Sydney Batch is a lawyer, social worker, and child welfare advocate who was raised in North Carolina. Christy Clark for NC House District 98:

Christy is an intellectual property and business law paralegal. She was born and raised in Roanoke, VA and currently lives in Huntersville with her husband Chris, their five children, and a rescue dog. Why she’s running in her own words: “I am an advocate for quality education, affordable healthcare, job opportunities, clean drinking water, voting rights, and keeping our community safe from gun violence. I’m running so I can ensure North Carolina is a place where my neighbors, friends, and family can thrive.” She is a gun sense candidates who is endorsed by Emily’s List, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club and many more.

Leslie Cohen for NC House District 20:

“Leslie is ready to serve the citizens of House District 20 because we all deserve clean water, excellent schools for our children and a state government which works for our best interests” She’s a gun sense candidate with a growing list of endorsements who is ready to bring real change and leadership to Wilmington and the surrounding areas which have been greatly impacted by Hurricane Florence and the subsequent flooding, coal ash, and other pollutants.

Marcia Morgan for NC House District 19:

Why she’s running: “Throughout my life, as an educator and a career military officer, my motivation has been to serve and to care for others, whether students or soldiers. I have thoroughly enjoyed retirement and the freedom to do as I please, but the current political environment has challenged me to step forward once again. I do not have a background in politics, but I DO have a strong sense of service to this community and a demonstrated ability to accomplish difficult tasks. I believe we have a commitment to improve our economy, provide equal opportunities for all and protect our environment – and one of the fundamental ways to accomplish those things is through quality education.” Marcia is fighting for the environment, education, economy and equality.

Martha Shafer for NC House District 62:

“I have always been proud to be from North Carolina, a state that led the South with its forward-looking commitment to education and job opportunities for all families. I’m running for House District 62 to be part of a new wave of smart, caring leaders who will once again put North Carolina citizens first.” Martha is committed to supporting teachers and public schools, expanding Medicaid, and fighting gerrymandering and is gun sense candidate who is also endorsed by Lillian’s List, Sierra Club, NOW, and a bunch of other great organizations.

Julie von Haefen for NC House District 36:

“Public education is under attack from our state legislature. As a parent and a PTA leader, I have seen it firsthand. This legislature has gradually, but steadily, dismantled our public school system, harming our students, our teachers and administrators, and our communities.

The time has come to change the direction of our state, and that is why I am running for the state house.” Julie has been endorsed by Barack Obama, Gov. Jim Hunt, NOW, Sierra Club, Emily’s List and many more.

Each one of these candidates is amazing in her own right but together they can accomplish so much-for North Carolina and for us all. Tickets to the event are $25 but please donate as much as you can-every vote counts and every dollar gets us a little closer to taking back the State House, the Hill, and the White House.
